Ayurveda certifications, explained

NABH. Ayur Diamond. Green Leaf. Centres wave these at you — here is what each one actually proves, and the one still being advertised years after it was retired.

Certifications come in layers. The physician's own registration is the non-negotiable; NABH marks hospital-grade clinical governance; Kerala Tourism's Ayur Diamond / Gold / Silver marks state-verified facilities and staffing. Green Leaf — still widely advertised — was retired in 2019.

The certificate that retired — and never left the brochures

Green Leaf (with its sibling Olive Leaf) was Kerala Tourism's original Ayurveda certification, and it earned real fame. But the state replaced it in 2019 with the Ayur Silver / Gold / Diamond scheme — government orders GO(Rt) 9/2019 and GO(Rt) 27/2019/Tourism. Old certificates simply lapse as they expire.

Years later, "Green Leaf certified" still appears on centre websites and travel brochures across Kerala. It isn't necessarily bad faith — often just an old badge nobody took down. But it is a perfect test: ask the centre for its current Ayur classification. A genuine centre knows exactly what you mean.

The state standard

What Ayur Diamond actually requires

The Ayur classification is a real, inspected standard — not a sticker. For the top tier, a centre must keep round-the-clock physician cover with both a male and a female doctor, government-approved male and female therapists, dedicated treatment rooms built to the state's own specification, GMP-certified medicines, and a labelled herbal garden of at least 100 species. Certificates run three years, and surprise inspections are permitted.

Gold and Silver apply the same standard at adequate and basic facility levels — a verified floor, whatever your budget.

NABH — the patient-grade marker

NABH (the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) runs a dedicated AYUSH standard for Ayurveda hospitals and Panchakarma clinics. It is the strongest institutional credential in this market: audited clinical protocols, documented patient-safety systems, hospital-grade governance. If you are coming as a patient — for a condition, not only a reset — NABH is the marker to ask about first.

What no certificate can tell you

Certification is voluntary, renewals lapse, and the state's public lists are not always current — some genuine, physician-led centres hold no badge at all, and a lapsed certificate is not by itself a verdict. That cuts both ways: absence is a question, not an answer.

So the certificate is never the whole check. The doctor's registration, assessment before booking, trained same-gender therapists, prices in writing — the checks in how to choose a legit centre — are what a badge can't fake and a missing badge can't hide.

Common questions

Which certification matters most?

The physician's own registration (BAMS / MD-Ayurveda with an NCISM or state council number) — no institutional badge substitutes for it. After that: NABH for clinical depth, Ayur Diamond / Gold / Silver for verified facilities, GMP for the medicines.

Is Green Leaf certification still valid?

The scheme was superseded in 2019 by Ayur Silver / Gold / Diamond; old certificates lapse as they expire. A centre showing Green Leaf as current is showing a legacy badge — ask for its current Ayur classification.

What does Ayur Diamond require?

Among other checks: 24-hour physician cover with a male and a female doctor, approved male and female therapists, treatment rooms to the state specification, GMP-certified medicines, and a labelled herbal garden of 100+ species — verified by inspection, renewable every three years.

Is NABH only for hospitals?

No — NABH runs a dedicated AYUSH standard covering Ayurveda hospitals and Panchakarma clinics, including centres attached to resorts. It marks clinical governance rather than luxury, which is exactly why it's worth asking about.

A centre I like has no certification. Should I walk away?

Not automatically — certification is voluntary and some genuine centres never apply. But it must earn trust the direct way: registered resident physician, assessment before booking, prices in writing. Our guide to choosing a legit centre walks you through exactly that.

Do certified centres cost more?

Certification runs across every price level — clinical hospitals, certified resorts and full luxury all carry it. The same doctor-led medicine is available at every tier; see what each tier really costs.
